A man who fell into a sinkhole in Yorkville on a snowy Friday night in Toronto has been rescued after being stuck in the ground for roughly half an hour.
Toronto Fire Platoon Chief Sofie Lasiuk said emergency crews were called to an alleyway beside a church near Davenport Road and Bay Street just after 10:30 p.m.
She said the man was walking between the buildings when he fell into the sinkhole.
The hole itself was about four-feet deep, but not very wide, and crews needed to dig around the perimeter to free the man, Lasiuk added.
He was transported to hospital with minor injuries.
“I don’t know why the hole was there, but we have notified Toronto Public Works to attend to it and fill in the hazard,” Lasiuk said.
Images from the scene show that the area has been blocked off by police tape and two large garbage bins.
