A team at Prince Edward Island’s Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) has given Santa’s reindeer the all-clear to make their annual Christmas Eve journey around the globe.
The college says all nine reindeer received comprehensive health checks over the weekend, revealing they’re in top physical condition and ready to guide Kris Kringle’s sleigh.
“Our veterinary team is always thrilled to contribute to this magical tradition,” said Dr. Dominique Griffon, dean of the Atlantic Veterinary College. “Santa’s team covers an extraordinary distance in one night, so a clean bill of health is absolutely essential.”
A team with the AVC’s Large Animal Medicine Service conducted thorough examinations of the reindeers’ cardiovascular systems, respiratory function and muscle strength on Saturday.
Additional checks for signs of illness or fatigue showed every reindeer is in “excellent shape and well prepared for the rigorous trip.”
The team says Rudolph received special care to make sure his unique nose was fully operational, providing vital illumination for Santa’s midnight navigation.
“These reindeer are truly remarkable athletes,” added Griffon. “We also made sure their vaccines were updated to protect against any seasonal illnesses. They’re not just ready to fly — they’re in peak condition to deliver joy to children everywhere.”
Santa’s magical crew also received some TLC after the exams, including hair-grooming and polishing antlers and hooves for their big night.
“The reindeer now stand fully prepped to take off on December 24, carrying gifts and holiday magic to households around the world,” reads the news release from AVC.
