AthenaHQ State of AI Search 2026: 84% of AI Answers Don’t Cite the Brand’s Own Site

New research from AthenaHQ finds AI answers cite a brand’s own domain just 16% of the time. The average brand is mentioned in 16.3% of AI answers, while category leaders capture 56.5%. Based on millions of AI-generated responses.

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 29, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — AthenaHQ, a Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) platform, released its State of AI Search 2026 Report, which revealed a sizable gap between the average brand and a select number of category leaders capturing the bulk of citations and mentions in answer engines.

Drawing on millions of AI-generated responses across eight leading LLMs, the report found the average brand is mentioned in just 16.3% of AI answers, while category leaders capture 56.5%, roughly 3.5 times the average. At the same time, a brand’s own domain goes uncited in 84% of AI answers, meaning the descriptions of products and services incorporated in replies from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and other LLMs are primarily sourced from external sources rather than a brand’s own website.

“AI search is a completely different ecosystem than traditional search, with each engine developing particular content preferences and trusted sources they consistently use to form opinions and make recommendations to customers,” said Andrew Yan, AthenaHQ CEO and Co-Founder. “One thing AI models have in common is the tendency to return to sources that have established trust. Brands who invest in citable content now are building long-term credibility that will be difficult to dislodge down the road.”

Other key findings include:

  • Content structured to answer specific questions is most effective for AI search visibility, with informational and comparative formats collectively driving more than half of all AI citations.
  • A handful of platforms are disproportionately influencing answer engines, with Reddit responsible for 21.9% of off-page citations (more than double than the next closest sources).
  • AI models behave differently from one another. Grok sources an average of 27 distinct domains per response, while Gemini references an average of five. It’s important to use cross-model monitoring rather than a single blended metric.
  • The most common entry point for AI crawlers is the blog, accounting for 37.5% of on-page paths.

AthenaHQ’s findings suggest AI search engines reward structured and sustained effort over individual optimization pushes, and citation advantages compound over time. With most brands still invisible to answer engines, teams implementing GEO now have the chance to gain an early mover advantage.
