Plaster of the Enduring Liberty Half Dollar coins with 9-11-01 privy mark

Special-issue Enduring Liberty Half Dollar coins with 9-11-01 privy mark to the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum (Memorial)

WASHINGTON, D.C., Aug. 21, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The United States Mint (Mint) today presented 2,983 special-issue Enduring Liberty Half Dollar coins with privy mark to the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum (Memorial) in honor of the victims of the September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993, terrorist attacks. The privy mark includes the date “9-11-01” encircled by the phrase, “ALWAYS REMEMBER,” a pledge to never forget the Americans whose tragedies and heroism marked September 11, 2001. The coins—struck at the Mint’s West Point facility in upstate New York—were delivered to the Memorial in advance of next month’s remembrance event, marking a quarter-century since the 9/11 attacks and coinciding with the Nation’s 250th anniversary year.

“This coin is a tangible representation of the strength it took for our nation to look forward, both 250 years ago at its founding, but more poignantly 25 years ago, as the world was changed forever,” said Mint Director Paul Hollis. “While we will never forget those fateful attacks, our nation continues to pass the torch of enlightenment to future generations in remembrance and in honor of the 2,983 victims.”

The obverse design shows a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty, her steadfast gaze looking outward as if toward the future. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1776 ~ 2026.”

The reverse design features Liberty passing her torch, its flame trailing with the momentum of purpose, to a new generation. Inscriptions are “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “HALF DOLLAR,” and “KNOWLEDGE IS THE ONLY GUARDIAN OF TRUE LIBERTY.”

The standard issue (non-privy mark) Enduring Liberty Half Dollar entered circulation at the beginning of 2026 and is being manufactured for one year only at the Mint’s Denver and Philadelphia facilities.

Authorized by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 (Public Law 116-330), and signed into law on January 13, 2021, by President Donald J. Trump, the coin commemorates 250 years of American Liberty by reflecting our country’s founding principles and honoring our Nation’s history.

About the United States Mint

Congress created the United States Mint in 1792, and the Mint became part of the Department of the Treasury in 1873. As the Nation’s sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage, the Mint is responsible for producing circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce. The Mint also produces numismatic products, including proof, uncirculated, and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; silver and bronze medals; and silver and gold bullion coins. Its numismatic programs are self-sustaining and operate at no cost to taxpayers.
