Police in Toronto say they have arrested a man wanted on a first-degree murder charge that dates back to 2022.
It was November 2022 when Toronto police were called to reports of a shooting in the Midland Avenue and Passmore Avenue area of the city.
Officers said 31-year-old Ding Ping Wang was sitting in his vehicle in a parking lot when someone approached the car and shot him. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
In the last month police have held two news conferences appealing for the public’s help in solving the case.
On July 31, investigators released surveillance video from the night of the fatal shooting, a re-enactment video depicting the shooter using his left hand, and a digital composite sketch.
Two weeks later, Toronto police said they’d made a breakthrough in their investigation after receiving tips from the public. They announced they were investigating the same suspect for an attempted murder in the same plaza in March 2023.
They said they believed the man wanted in the 2022 killing of Wang goes by the name “Jay.”

Police previously said Wang, a husband and father who owned a kitchen cabinet business, regularly visited the industrial plaza for work.
Investigators do not believe his killing was random, though they have not determined a motive.
On Monday, approximately one month after releasing the sketch, police said they’d made an arrest.
Justin Longshaw, 39, was arrested and is facing a first-degree murder charge. Investigators say Longshaw’s connection to the 2023 attempted murder is still being investigated.
Global News has learned that Longshaw was arrested in jail on Monday, where he was already in custody awaiting trial on a 2023 charge.
Court records obtained by Global News show that on Dec. 24, 2023, Longshaw was charged with careless use of a firearm. He has been in custody since that time.
Court records also show that he has a lengthy record and is subject to a lifetime weapons ban.
In 2019, he was sentenced to 60 days in prison after receiving credit for four years of pre-sentence custody for an incident outside the Cabana Pool Bar in 2016 in which he threatened Cabana security staff after being ejected from the club.
He retreated to the parking lot and returned with what appeared to be a firearm.
He continued to threaten the security staff, pointing the firearm at them.
When police arrived to arrest Longshaw, he falsely identified himself. A judge found Longshaw guilty of numerous charges including two counts of uttering death threats, possessing a dangerous weapon, using an imitation firearm while threatening death, obstructing justice and failing to comply with probation.
In addition to the custodial sentence, Longshaw was designated a dangerous offender and placed on a seven-year probation order.
