sensiBel’s SBM140B sets a new performance standard for MEMS microphones, reaching 84dB SNR, 146dB AOP with 24-bit digital output

OSLO, Norway, Aug. 31, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — sensiBel, the leader in optical MEMS sensing, today introduced its newest product: the SBM140B, the first microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) microphone to combine an 84dBA signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a 146dB SPL acoustic overload point (AOP) — delivering a 136dB dynamic range, reproducing audio with industry-leading precision and clarity.

“Offering the lowest noise and widest dynamic range in MEMS microphones, our newly announced SBM140B — like our commercially available SBM100B — uniquely delivers precision audio recording in any soundscape,” said Kieran Harney, CEO, sensiBel. “That’s the performance level demanded in acoustic cameras and beamforming arrays, humanoid robots, acoustic drone detection, measurement and instrumentation, and immersive audio applications. No capacitive MEMS microphone on the market comes close.”

sensiBel’s Optical MEMS Architecture
sensiBel’s optical MEMS architecture, the foundation of its sensor portfolio, measures the displacement of the device’s membrane in response to an audio input. It enables very low noise and extremely high dynamic range of 136dB — providing a multitude of benefits to a broad range of sensors, including acoustic sensors.

“Taking full advantage of sensiBel’s optical MEMS architecture, the SBM140B achieves an exceptionally low 10dBA equivalent input noise while simultaneously supporting extremely high sound pressure levels, all without clipping or compression,” said Jakob Vennerød, co-founder and head of product development, sensiBel. “When designed into acoustic applications, the SBM140B enhances AI in acoustic-sensing applications and improves microphone-array beamforming performance.

“The SBM140B also delivers true studio-quality recording in a micro-scale device that fits on a fingertip,” added Vennerød.

SBM140B Features
Unlike conventional capacitive MEMS microphones — which can’t handle large swings in sound levels — sensiBel’s optical MEMS architecture maintains full performance across an ultra-wide acoustic range in one configuration.

This allows the SBM140B and other sensiBel microphones to capture audio with high precision and accuracy, including:

  • Very quiet, distant background sounds
  • Everyday speech and conversation
  • Acoustic signals from loud environments, machinery and equipment
  • Music and live performances
  • Sudden very loud sounds

For More Information

The SBM140B with 84dBA SNR has sampled to select customers and will be in production in Q1 2027.

The SBM100B — which achieves an 80dB SNR, a 146dB AOP, and a 132dB dynamic range — is available today and is shipping in a range of customer applications. Companies can purchase AURORA™ and POLARIS™ — two evaluation and recording solutions that are compatible with both the SBM140B and SBM100B — to begin development today.
