Acclaimed designer Michael Shinall leads development of Tasting History: The Board Game, launching on Kickstarter for tabletop gaming later this year

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 01, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Millions of people have journeyed through history one recipe at a time with Max Miller. Soon, they’ll have the opportunity to experience those stories around their own table.

Salt Entertainment today announced Tasting History with Max Miller: The Board Game, the first tabletop adaptation of Miller’s acclaimed food history YouTube series. Designed by tabletop game designer Michael Shinall, the game transforms the fascinating stories behind history’s most memorable foods into an engaging tabletop experience for families, history lovers, food enthusiasts, and gamers alike.

Shinall, whose design credits include Marvel Zombies: A Zombicide Game, Bloodborne: The Board Game, Masters of the Universe: Clash for Eternia, and A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game, brings years of experience creating immersive games to the project.

Hosted by TIME100 Creator Max Miller, Tasting History has become one of YouTube’s most celebrated history and food channels by combining historical recipes and storytelling with faithfully recreated recipes from around the world and throughout time. Each episode uncovers the people, traditions, and unexpected events behind dishes spanning ancient civilizations, medieval feasts, royal courts, wartime kitchens, and beyond.

“I’m an avid tabletop gamer. I have an entire room filled with games and have met most of my best friends at board game meetups,” said Miller. “When the opportunity to turn Tasting History into a board game arose, I could immediately picture it. I love games that tell a story and let you discover new things as you play, and that’s exactly what Tasting History is about: discovery through storytelling. Add in my love of strategy board games and competitive nature, and I know this will make for an awesome, repeatable gaming experience. Plus, it gives fans something to play while they wait for their historic meal to cook.”

“Max has built something truly special with Tasting History, a series that makes the past feel vivid, approachable, and fun,” said Geoff Skinner, Salt Entertainment’s President of Gaming. “We see this board game as a natural extension of that experience, giving fans a new reason to gather around the table and a new way to explore our shared culinary history.”

“The best tabletop games create stories people remember long after the game is over,” said Michael Shinall, Head of Design and Development at Salt Entertainment. “Tasting History already does that through food and storytelling. Our goal has been to preserve that same spirit of discovery while creating a game that’s welcoming, surprising, and endlessly replayable.”

The project represents the first tabletop expansion of the growing Tasting History franchise and reflects Salt Entertainment’s strategy of partnering with exceptional creators to expand brands into premium tabletop games, publishing, and other entertainment experiences.

Tasting History with Max Miller: The Board Game will launch on Kickstarter later this year. Fans who follow the campaign before launch will receive the Tasting History: The Board Game – Garum Expansion Pack free with their pledge. Additional details, gameplay reveals, and campaign announcements will be shared in the coming months.
