Cedarville University Program Equips Students to Identify, Protect Original Work

Cedarville, Ohio, Sept. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As artificial intelligence reshapes how ideas are created, shared and replicated, Cedarville University is launching a pilot program designed to help students identify, document and protect their original work while preparing for an AI-influenced economy.
Through the Cedarville AI + IP Stewardship Pilot, students, faculty and staff can learn practical approaches to intellectual property, including how to establish records of original work developed through academic, creative and professional projects.
The initiative reflects Cedarville’s commitment to preparing students to steward their God-given creativity with wisdom, integrity and purpose. As generative AI becomes increasingly integrated into higher education and the global workplace, questions surrounding human authorship, attribution, intellectual property and responsible AI use are becoming more significant. The pilot gives participants an opportunity to explore those issues while developing practices for documenting their own creative contributions.
“In the age of AI, knowledge alone is no longer enough,” said Kary Oberbrunner, Berry Chair of Entrepreneurship at Cedarville University. “Students need to understand what they create, why it has value and how to steward it. My hope is that Cedarville graduates enter the marketplace not only with a degree, but with an IP portfolio they can prove and protect.”
The opt-in pilot provides participants access to Instant IP, a blockchain-based platform founded by Oberbrunner that creates timestamped records of original work. The platform is providing complimentary protection credits to Cedarville students, faculty and staff participating in the pilot.
Participants can use the pilot to document intellectual assets such as research concepts, designs, frameworks, academic projects and creative works. The process is intended to help them recognize the potential value of their ideas while learning about intellectual property stewardship and responsible innovation.
For students, building an intellectual property portfolio can provide evidence of original work to prospective employers, investors, collaborators and customers. Such a portfolio can complement a traditional degree by demonstrating creativity, initiative, problem-solving, entrepreneurial thinking and value creation — skills relevant across industries and international markets increasingly influenced by AI.
“College has traditionally been about what you know,” Oberbrunner said. “The future will increasingly be about what you can create, what you can prove you created and what you can responsibly do with it.”
The pilot also complements Cedarville’s broader commitment to approaching artificial intelligence through a biblical worldview. The university seeks to prepare students to evaluate and use emerging technologies with discernment while emphasizing human authorship, intellectual integrity, ethical innovation and God-given creativity.
The initiative also contributes to a broader conversation in higher education about how colleges and universities can prepare graduates for workplaces where generative AI is changing how knowledge and creative work are produced, evaluated and shared.
“What if the question colleges asked was not simply, ‘Did our students earn a degree?’” Oberbrunner said. “What if we also asked, ‘What did they create, and how can they steward and leverage it?’ That changes the conversation from education alone to value creation.”
Through the Cedarville AI + IP Stewardship Pilot, the university aims to connect education, responsible artificial intelligence use, intellectual property awareness and entrepreneurship as students prepare to enter their professions and contribute original work in an increasingly AI-driven global economy.
