Dodgers Fans Said They’d Turn Down $1 Gas for Another Championship. Edmunds is Fueling Their Dedication.
The Tommy Tanks Gas Giveaway was inspired by a survey of more than 2,000 Dodgers fans conducted by Edmunds earlier this season1 that revealed just how far fans are willing to go for the Boys in Blue. When asked to choose between the Dodgers winning a third consecutive World Championship or gas prices falling to $1 per gallon, 80% chose another ring. And they’re willing to brave some serious LA traffic for their team, too: Nearly one-third (32%) said they’d spend five hours or more traveling to and from a Dodgers home game in October.

“Between driving in LA traffic and keeping up with high fuel costs, local drivers could use a win,” said Tommy Edman. “Teaming with Edmunds to fuel up the best fanbase in baseball for another October run is an awesome way to thank LA for showing up for us night in and night out.”

High Gas Prices Add to Affordability Pressures for LA Drivers
The giveaway comes as LA drivers continue to face stubbornly high prices at the pump, adding to the persistent affordability challenges facing vehicle owners. According to AAA, the average price for regular fuel in the Los Angeles/Long Beach metro area was $6.09 yesterday, September 16.

The pressure at the pump comes as consumers are already navigating record-high vehicle expenses: Edmunds recently reported that the average monthly payment on new-vehicle purchases hit a new record of $777 in Q2, and the average price for a 3-year-old used vehicle rose to $32,461 last quarter, a new second-quarter record.

“We know how much Southern Californians rely on their cars and how quickly the costs of driving can add up,” said Alison Steinlauf Anziska, senior vice president of marketing at Edmunds. “Dodgers fans have shown us just how far they’ll go to support their team, and Tommy’s been showing them exactly why they call him ‘Tommy Tanks.’ We thought it would be fun to take that nickname beyond the ballpark and give fans a little relief at the pump as they cheer on the Dodgers into October.”

More Dodgers Fan Survey Findings Highlight Serious Dedication
Beyond their willingness to choose another Dodgers championship over $1 gas and spend long hours on the road traveling to October home games, Edmunds’ survey of more than 2,000 Dodgers fans from earlier this season revealed a few other ways their fandom shows up on and off the road:

  • Many fans are susceptible to catching a case of the ‘Dodger blues’: Two-thirds (66%) of fans said they have skipped work, school or another major obligation to attend a Dodger game.
  • Dodgers passion extends to the driveway: 13% of Dodger fans drive a blue car, well above the California state average of 7% of new vehicles sold in 2025.
  • Fuel economy matters to Dodgers fans: When considering the car-shopping priorities that mattered most to fans, fuel economy ranked among the top three factors, along with price and reliability.

Edmunds, Edman and the Dodgers Go ‘Back-to-Back’
The gas giveaway and fan survey are the latest elements of Edmunds’ ‘Back to Back’ brand campaign in collaboration with the Dodgers and Edman. As part of the campaign, Edmunds is also transforming its Gas Savings Calculator into the ‘Tommy Tanks Gas Calculator,’ helping consumers estimate how much they could save on fuel by switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle or different powertrain.

Earlier this season, Edmunds executed a sweepstakes offering fans a chance at the ultimate VIP gameday experience and a free vehicle appraisal. Edmunds also launched ‘The Challenge,’ the brand’s second consecutive hero digital ad campaign starring Edman as he helps fans make the right call in their next car shopping decision with the help of Edmunds.
