SAN FRANCISCO, CA, USA, Sept. 09, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Diabetics Trust, a nationwide buyer of unused diabetic supplies, reports that a growing share of the people using its buyback service are not the patient. They are family members and caregivers managing supplies that belonged to a parent, spouse or relative after a death, a move into care or a change in who handles daily treatment.

Families are left with diabetic supplies

According to the CDC, close to three in ten American adults aged 65 and older live with diabetes. Most hold two to three months of supplies at home at any time because mail-order pharmacies ship on 90-day cycles. When care changes or a family member passes away, the household is left with sealed test strips, Dexcom or FreeStyle Libre sensors, Omnipod pods, pen needles and lancets that no one in the home uses. Families rarely know which items hold value, which can be donated and which belong in the trash. Many delay the decision until the boxes expire.

The existing process works for mixed boxes

The same three-step process that serves individual patients handles a family’s mixed collection without a separate form or contact. The process runs as follows:

  1. Select each product on the quote page by brand and count, enter the expiration date and condition, and receive an instant quote for the full set.
  2. Print the prepaid USPS shipping label, pack the boxes and drop them at any post office.
  3. Receive an email once inspection is complete, with photographs of any item that did not qualify, followed by payment by PayPal or check within 1 to 2 business days.

Support is available seven days a week by email and phone for families unsure which items qualify before they ship.

Details that matter to caregivers

Several standard features of the service remove the most common problems families face with a relative’s supplies. These include the following:

  • Pharmacy labels are removed by the inspection team at no charge, so families do not risk tearing the box or exposing the patient’s information
  • All personal information on packaging is removed and shredded before processing
  • Items that do not qualify are disposed of at no cost, or returned on request for a flat $6 fee
  • Payment is issued in the name given on the quote, so an executor or caregiver can be paid directly

Condition rules stay the same

Items must be factory sealed, unexpired and in original US packaging. Boxes with intact seals and minor shelf wear qualify at full or partial value. Opened, expired, stained or crushed boxes do not qualify. The full inspection standard and packaging advice are published in the company’s diabetic supplies buyback guide.

Company comment

“A meaningful share of the messages we receive start with ‘my mother passed’ or ‘my husband switched devices.’ Those families are not looking for a special programme. They want to know whether the boxes on the kitchen table are worth anything, and they want one clear answer,” said Diabetics Trust. “The quote tool gives them that answer in a few minutes, and the inspection photos tell them exactly what happened to each item.”
