American Urological Association Releases Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer Guideline Amendment
BALTIMORE, Sept. 03, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today, the American Urological Association (AUA), in partnership with the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO), released the 2026 amendment to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer (NMIBC) Guideline, providing clinicians with updated, evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with NMIBC.
NMIBC accounts for approximately 80% of newly diagnosed bladder cancer cases in the U.S., requiring ongoing monitoring and treatment. The updated Guideline incorporates the latest evidence and reflects a rapidly evolving treatment landscape, including new recommendations on bladder-preserving therapies and disease monitoring, with greater emphasis on individualized care.
“As the treatment landscape for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer continues to evolve, it is essential that clinical guidance reflects the latest evidence,” said Peter E. Clark, MD, chair of the Guideline. “This amendment provides clinicians with practical recommendations that support individualized decision-making while addressing emerging therapeutic approaches and ongoing advances in the field.”
The amended Guideline includes 40 recommendations and updates related to risk stratification, pathologic terminology, biomarkers, surveillance strategies, and treatment options. Significant additions include new recommendations supporting the use of active surveillance, office-based treatment, and chemoablative therapies for select patients with recurrent low-grade disease, as well as guidance for managing high-risk disease involving the prostatic urethra.
Key updates include:
- Updated risk stratification to help clinicians better tailor treatment and follow-up plans to a patient’s individual cancer risk.
- New bladder-preserving options for select patients with recurrent low-grade disease, including active surveillance, office-based treatment, and chemoablative therapies that may help some patients avoid surgery.
- Expanded discussion on urinary biomarkers, including their role in assessing treatment response.
- Discussion of emerging therapies and newly published research, reflecting rapid advances in the treatment of NMIBC, including options for patients with BCG-unresponsive disease.
