SSA expands its fast-track disability list to 314 conditions, speeding decisions for severe and often rare diagnoses

Belleville, Illinois, Aug. 31, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Allsup, a leading nationwide provider of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) representation, veterans disability appeal, return to work and healthcare benefits services, is sharing news of the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) addition of 14 medical conditions to its Compassionate Allowances (CAL) list, announced Aug. 11.
The additions bring the Compassionate Allowances list to 314 conditions. Since the initiative began, more than 1.2 million people with severe disabilities have been approved through the accelerated disability determination process, according to SSA.
New Conditions Reflect Recognition Of Rare And Severe Diagnoses
The Compassionate Allowances program identifies conditions that, based on medical criteria, clearly meet the agency’s definition of disability — many of them rare and several affecting infants and young children. For these claims, SSA can often approve benefits on confirmation of the diagnosis, without the extended review most applications go through. Even so, a CAL listing does not mean automatic approval. Applicants still must provide medical documentation of the diagnosis and meet all SSDI or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) eligibility requirements, including a qualifying work history for SSDI.
The 14 newly added conditions are:
- Adenylosuccinate Lyase Deficiency – Neonatal Form and Type 1
- Aicardi Syndrome
- Baraitser-Winter Syndrome
- Beare-Stevenson Cutis Gyrata Syndrome
- Bohring-Opitz Syndrome
- CASK-Related Gene Disorders
- Hepatosplenic T-Cell Lymphoma
- Lafora Disease
- Malignant Migrating Partial Seizures of Infancy (MMPSI)
- OPHN1 Syndrome
- Primary Cardiac Sarcoma
- Primary Intracranial Malignant Melanoma
- Uveal Melanoma – with Metastases
- Warburg Micro Syndrome
The additions appear on the SSA’s updated list of 314 Compassionate Allowances conditions, dated Aug. 10, 2026. The complete list is available from the Social Security Administration.
The SSA uses technology to flag potential CAL claims and speed processing, though medical records are still required for an accurate decision. In some claims, the agency receives electronic medical records through its Health IT program, which can support faster decisions.
