CHENGDU, China, Sept. 10, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — On August 26, a Chinese documentary screening and creator exchange event focused on cross-cultural documentary filmmaking, organized by Chengdu Radio & Television, China, was held in New York. Two documentaries, “Hope for the Future: Bernard Loeffke” and “The Unending Journey: Roger T. Ames and Chinese Philosophy,” were screened at the event, which was attended by approximately 50 academic experts, representatives from cultural institutions, film and television professionals, and local audience members.

The documentary “Hope for the Future: Bernard Loeffke” was produced by a Chinese creative team and runs approximately 30 minutes. The film centers on the personal story of Bernard Loeffke, a 92-year-old retired U.S. Army major general, using interviews, historical materials, and archival footage to trace his real experiences of engaging with Chinese society at different stages of his life, including learning Chinese, encountering traditional Chinese medicine, and skydiving with Chinese people. These experiences span different eras and served as important source material for the film’s creation. Drawing from Loeffke’s experiences, the creative team organized related figures, events, and historical materials to present a cross-cultural journey spanning decades through his story. After the screening, General Loeffke participated in the post-screening discussion via video.

The event also featured an exchange session among documentary creators. The creative team members engaged in discussions with American film, television, and documentary industry professionals on topics including approaches to character-driven documentary filmmaking, cross-cultural narratives, and the distribution of documentaries in different cultural contexts. They also exchanged views on documentary production, content development, and possibilities for future project collaboration. Guests participating in the exchange included American documentary producer and CEO of Rolling Pictures Anthony Argento, Director of the Department of World Languages and Professor of Chinese at Miami Dade College Yu Xuejun, as well as Chinese independent documentary director and producer Feng Du, Chairwoman of Asia Art Foundation of New York Liu Mei, and director of “Hope for the Future: Bernard Loeffke” Zeng Yinyin.

In addition to the film screenings and creator exchange, the event also featured cultural experience areas for Chinese language, traditional Chinese medicine, and Chinese cuisine, where participants could engage through language interaction, hands-on experience, and food tasting. This event not only effectively expanded the channels for the overseas distribution of Chinese documentary works and established a platform for regular exchange and cooperation between Chinese and American film and television professionals, but also deepened people-to-people cultural exchanges between China and the United States.
