HSINCHU, Taiwan, Aug. 31, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan unveiled its University Science Park (USP) on August 10, the first science park in Taiwan initiated and operated by a university. Marking 2026 as the park’s inaugural year, NTHU said it would collaborate with innovation ecosystems worldwide to accelerate the commercialization of university deep-tech research, advance open innovation, establish cross-border innovation hubs, and cultivate the next generation of unicorns.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) approved NTHU’s acquisition plan for Chung Hua University (CHU) in 2025. Under the approved plan, USP has been established on the CHU campus as a hub for commercializing university deep-tech research and building an innovation ecosystem. Located near Hsinchu Science Park, a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing, USP spans more than 20 hectares and is well positioned to tap into the area’s extensive technology and industry resources. Building on NTHU’s long-standing strengths in deep-tech research commercialization and innovation, the park will initially focus on semiconductors, quantum technology, new energy, biomedical technologies and artificial intelligence. Two major initiatives — the NTHU Future Fund and NTHU Accelerator — will serve as engines for the park’s growth.
The NTHU Future Fund, jointly established by NTHU and Top Taiwan Venture Capital Co., Ltd. in July, has an initial target size of approximately NT$1 billion and a 15-year investment horizon. The fund will invest in deep-tech startups from the seed through growth stages, prioritizing NTHU spin-offs; startups founded by NTHU faculty, students, and alumni; and global startups engaged in university-industry collaboration with NTHU or participating in the USP innovation ecosystem.
Building on NTHU Garage’s more than a decade of experience in supporting startups from the seed stage through scale-up to public listing, NTHU Accelerator will offer comprehensive acceleration programs for startups worldwide, helping their teams access essential talent, facilities, capital, markets and supply-chain resources. NTHU has long fostered a strong culture of faculty-led entrepreneurship.
Numerous startups founded by NTHU professors have entered the capital markets, including eMemory Technology Inc., Heron Neutron Medical Corp., Advanced Ceramic X Corporation, Apex Biotechnology Corp. and Finesse Technology Co., Ltd. Among Taiwan’s listed, over-the-counter and emerging-stock companies founded directly by university professors, more than 60% of the total market capitalization comes from companies led by NTHU faculty members. NTHU Accelerator will carry forward the university’s entrepreneurial DNA, with a focus on developing the next generation of deep-tech unicorns.
NTHU President W. John Kao (高為元) noted that USP is designed to remove some of the most difficult barriers in university innovation and entrepreneurship, establishing a complete value chain from basic research and technology development to startup incubation, industry collaboration and capital markets. Quoting Apple co-founder Steve Jobs — “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower” — Kao said the park is likewise an ideal environment for cultivating leaders and welcomed partners from innovation ecosystems around the world.
CHU President Victor Wei-Chi Liu (劉維琪) said, “Our board strongly supports the concept of building a complete value chain through USP. It has therefore decided to donate the campus and university assets to NTHU once CHU ceases operations. Together, we hope to pioneer this university science park model and establish a new model for private university transformation and collaboration between public and private universities in Taiwan.”
USP will gradually expand its physical footprint and the scope of its industry partnerships while actively advancing cross-border collaboration among innovation ecosystems. NTHU’s College of Semiconductor Research (CoSR) and university-level joint research centers with industry have already moved into the park.
NTHU welcomes companies, universities, startup accelerators and deep-tech investors from around the world to partner with the university in cultivating the next generation of deep-tech unicorns.
