A Winnipeg man has been arrested in connection with a cold case investigation of a 1997 murder in New Jersey.
Robert Creter, 60, was arrested in Winnipeg for the death of Tammy Tignor. He was extradited to the United States to face a first-degree murder charge. The charge has not been tested in court.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, Tignor’s body was found in Washington Valley Park in Bridgewater, N.J. Her death was ruled a homicide that remained unsolved for 26 years.
As time went on, advances in DNA technology allowed investigators to revisit evidence.
In April 2023, a DNA profile provided to the Combined DNA Index System matched Creter’s offender profile.
In May 2024, a warrant for Creter’s arrest was issued. He was taken into custody in Winnipeg on June 27 and then turned over to the U.S. Marshals Service on Nov. 26.
Police say Creter and Tignor were not known to each other.
The accused is expected to make his first court appearance on Wednesday.
